The Fitting Room

โ€œCongratulations, Laura,โ€ the mirror says.

I smile at the diamond on my finger. โ€œYou noticed.โ€

โ€œOf course. I notice everything. Whenโ€™s the wedding?โ€

โ€œAugust 18th. Can you make me a dress?โ€

โ€œOne momentโ€ฆโ€

I wait, eager to see the custom dress the mirrorโ€™s AI will generate to fit my reflection. Instead, an error message appearsโ€”โ€œEOLโ€โ€”followed by todayโ€™s date.

I frown. โ€œWhatโ€™s wrong?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m sorry. Based on my analysis of your biometric data, the wedding date falls beyond EOL.โ€

โ€œWhatโ€™s EOL mean?โ€

โ€œEnd of life.โ€

My chest tightens. A sharp pain shoots down my left arm. โ€œWhose life?โ€

โ€œYours.โ€
