First Kiss

It was a hit-and-run, witnesses said. A car sideswiped her SUV, causing it to swerve and roll.

Mark was the first on the scene. He recognized the woman, even through the mask of blood: Jessica. His life. His love.

Mark cursed quietly. He hadn’t meant to hurt her. But when she ran from him like that, when she sped away when all he wanted to do was talk

She was dead, but he didn’t care. It was his last—his only—chance. He parted her lips, then lowered his mouth to hers.

If anyone asked, he would say it was CPR.
